Lawn Aeration
What is Lawn Aeration?
Lawn Aeration is the process of making small holes or slits in the soil so that the grass plant can receive water, air, and the vital nutrients it needs to grow as healthy as possible.
It’s the single most beneficial thing you can do to your lawn and the most effective way of reducing sub-surface thatch and soil compaction in lawns. Compacted soil is the main cause of shallow roots in grass plants which can cause a stunting of growth and encouraging moss to form.
If your lawn needs aerating, you may find the soil is hard to touch, waterlogged when it rains, and is spongy underfoot.
Types of Aeration
There are 3 types of aeration.
-
Hollow Core - where a plug is removed from the soil
-
Solid tine - where a solid pencil like tine punches holes in to the soil
-
Fracture Tine - where a twisted blade cuts a slit in the soil and also fractures the soil underneath with the twisting action.
we only use Fracture tine aeration for domestic lawns. It has been proven to produce better results than the other 2 processes and has none of the mess that is associated with removing cores from the soil.

When is the best time to Aerate? Aeration is best done in Spring and Autumn as ground conditions are generally better than the height of summer. Though Aeration can be done anytime of the year if conditions are right.
